2016 Goals

2015 wasn’t my favorite year. I won’t even try to pretend it was. I moved from a state (California) I absolutely adore to a state (Arizona) I can’t believe I’m back in. My grandfather passed. And a percentage of my family cut me out of relationship with them because of misunderstandings surrounding my grandfather’s death.

It’s been a year.

That being said, I have high hopes for the new year. We always do though, don’t we? When the ball drops, when the champagne glasses clink together, we always feel that rush that comes with the fact that it’s another year, another chance to get things right or to finish things we didn’t have the motivation or will to finish in the past year.

The road to hell is certainly paved with good intentions. That’s why intentions have no place in 2016 for me. I have a lot of things I want to accomplish, and that I will accomplish. And behind my good intentions, I will put forth some more blood, sweat and tears. But more importantly, I’ll be putting more of my focus on God and what He wants to do in my life and what He wants me to do.

Here’s some of the awesome things I’ll be accomplishing in 2016:

Publish More

The entire time I lived in the Bay Area, I only published one book – and that was a non-fiction piece I will be drawing more attention to this next year. I did publish a few short stories in the Crossover’s anthologies, but since penning and publishing the fourth book in my Black Earth series, Exodus, back in November of 2012, I haven’t published any major pieces of fiction.

That will change in 2016.

I have plans to republish my LZR Project, write a new draft for and publish the third book in my Expired Reality series (which is already years overdue), write and publish a brand new fiction piece before the end of the year, and write/publish a new short story every month starting in March. This is all on top of the books/stories I’ll be publishing through The Crossover Alliance.

The key to this one is to keep with a daily writing regime instead of relying on NaNoWriMo to get me through each year. I’ve tried to establish a word-count goal in previous years, but that just doesn’t seem to work for me, so I’ll stick with ‘an hour’ or whatever timeframe of writing I can each day, and work with that as best I can.

This is another goal I have severely backslidden – backslided – failed with in previous years. I always sign up for the Goodreads Reading Challenge and end up completing maybe 1% of my goal – if I’m lucky.

Lucky for me, the new Star Wars movie disappointed me to no end – more on that in an upcoming blog post – and I’ve decided to start collecting all of the Extended Universe books and read them all over the course of the next few years and probably even beyond so I can live in a Star Wars universe untouched by Disney.

Increase My Grammar / Editing Skills

Seeing how I not only run an online publishing company but am also an author, I figured it would benefit me to brush up on my grammar and editing skills. I found this awesome website called grammarbook.com and it showcases a plethora of free grammar instructionals by Jane Straus. The website has come in handy for me a number of different times, and when I was asked what I wanted for Christmas, Jane’s book hit my list right away.

Learn Basic German

My wife got me a language learning kit for Christmas. German. Seeing how I’m mostly German, I figured it was time I learned the language. And it seems more fun to learn than a lot of the other languages. I plan to start this language course in mid-January. If anything, it’s something new to venture into and it may help me with a future book…

Blog Each And Every Week

Yeah – this is one I have attempted previous years and failed at. Severely. I don’t just mean blogging my Friday Muse pieces either, I mean actual blogging about my thoughts on writing, faith, gaming, the world, and whatever else I feel like blogging about that week. And more than just blog, I want to post pics, reviews, quotes, and other interesting things that will make this more of an online journal than just a static web page in the blogosphere.

So, here’s to 2016 and all of the goals that will actually be accomplished.
